DHAKA, May 11, 2025 (BSS) -- The most sacred and sweet word in this world is 'Mother'.
Every year, the second Sunday of May is celebrated all over the world as 'Mother's Day'. Accordingly, today is 'Mother's Day'.
In the words of the poet: The word 'mother' may be short, but there is no name sweeter in all the three worlds.
Over time, one thing has become a traditional truth and that is - the most dear, most beloved word or relationship known to children in the world is "Mother."
Although many people say that there is no need for a separate day to show love and respect to mothers, every day is Mother's Day.
Nevertheless, all mothers are remembered with deep affection by their children all over the world on the second Sunday of May.
The day is such a special day, when all mothers and those who are like mothers are respected at all levels, from the family to the state.
Because the relationship between a child and their mother is so strong, there is no other relationship in this world like it.
Marking the day, various social and cultural organizations of our country have taken up various programmes.
Who else is like a mother in the world? So every year this day reminds us of the dignity of a dear and loving mother. The respect for the mother is also given great importance in the Holy Scriptures.
The history of Mother's Day dates back to the Middle Ages when people working away from home would return to their mother church and visit their mothers on the fourth Sunday of Lent.
In Britain, this became known as Mothering Sunday, a time for families to reunite and honor mothers. The observance's date varied each year due to its link with Easter, and the focus was on reconnecting with family rather than the age at which children left home.
In modern times, Mother's Day originated in the United States and is celebrated annually on the second Sunday of May. Anna Jarvis, an American woman, campaigned for the creation of Mother's Day to honor the sacrifices and work of mothers.
After Anna Jarvis's death in 1905, her daughter, Anna Maria Reeves Jarvis, continued her efforts. In 1908, she organized the first official Mother's Day celebration at a church in Grafton, West Virginia.
On May 9, 1914, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day, marking the official beginning of the celebration.
Since then, Mother's Day has been widely adopted and is now celebrated in more than a hundred countries, including Bangladesh, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Russia, Germany, and the United States.
On the day, our country's children also want to do something for their mothers. In addition to giving gifts to their mothers, they express their love by spending time with them. Social media feeds are filled with loving pictures and memories of mothers and children.
Several fashion and gift houses provided various types of gift baskets, as restaurants have lucrative offers on the occasion of the day.
